Es hat mich mit Freude erfüllt, anlässlich des internationalen Frauentages über weibliche Werte, UnternehmerInnentum, Women Empowerment aber auch über Finanzmärkte und Vorsorge zu sprechen.

Denn Altersarmut ist weiblich und jede vierte Frau in Österreich ist potentiell betroffen – das darf einfach nicht sein!

I was very happy to talk about female values, entrepreneurship, women empowerment but also about financial markets and pensions on the occasion of International Women's Day.

At the moment, it is evident that the coronavirus pandemic is not only causing loss of life and damage to the economy in many areas, but also huge opportunities are opening up. So could now be the time for socially responsible and effective investments to change the global economy sustainably? I say yes!

Es ist unterdessen augenscheinlich, dass die Coronavirus-Pandemie nicht nur Verlust an Menschenleben und eine Schädigung der Wirtschaft in vielen Teilbereichen bringt, sondern sich auch riesige Chancen auftun. Könnte also jetzt die Zeit für sozial verantwortliche und wirkungsvolle Investitionen so richtig gekommen sein, um die Weltwirtschaft nachhaltig zu verändern? Ich sage ja!

Viele Konzerne instrumentalisieren längst den Nachhaltigkeitsboom und nützen diesen gekonnt als Marketing- und Verkaufsstrategie, indem sie mit eigenen Schlagworten und Labels faire Produkte vortäuschen. 

Gute Absicht oder Greenwashing?
Manchmal habe ich das Gefühl, dass gerade diejenigen, die sich bemühen, Gutes in die Welt zu bringen, besonders kritisch beäugt werden, weil eben heute alles hinterfragt wird. Und das ist gut so, denn oft ist das Misstrauen absolut berechtigt, davon zeugen unzählige Beispiele. Gearbeitet wird mit versteckten Kompromissen – insofern, dass ein kleiner Teil umweltfreundlich ist, über den Rest jedoch nicht gesprochen wird – oder mit Beschönigungen, Verschleierungen und Bildern, die vom Inhalt ablenken.

A few days ago the Federal Environment Agency invited to an updating event on the subject of "EU Taxonomy". The introductory words by Jürgen Schneider, Head of the Climate and Energy Section at the Federal Ministry, immediately got the audience right to the point with the latest examples Shell and ExxonMobil, and yes, there is a lot going on in the field of ​​sustainability and climate protection. The last week was extremely exciting with the absolutely remarkable verdict in the Netherlands against the private oil and gas company Shell. Shell was obliged to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions by 2030! This proves that Europe takes the climate goals seriously!

Vor einigen Tagen hat das Umweltbundesamt zu einer Informationsveranstaltung zum Thema: "EU-Taxonomie“ geladen und den Kreis der TeilnehmerInnen über den aktuellen Stand der Dinge aufgeklärt.

Die einleitenden Worte von Jürgen Schneider, Sektionschef Klima und Energie im Bundesministerium, ließen die Zuhörerschaft mit den jüngsten Beispielen Shell und ExxonMobil sofort in medias res gehen und ja, es tut sich viel im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit und Klimaschutz. Die letzte Woche war extrem spannend mit dem absolut bemerkenswerten Urteil in den Niederlanden gegen den privaten Öl- und Gaskonzern Shell. Erstinstanzlich wurde Shell dazu verpflichtet, seinen CO2-Ausstoß bis 2030 drastisch zu reduzieren! Dieses beweist, dass Europa die Klimaziele ernst nimmt!

Wie können wir einen wirksamen Beitrag zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft leisten? Ist das tatsächlich die Frage, die im Zentrum aller Bestrebungen und Aktivitäten, aller Pläne und Vorgaben, die aus Brüssel kommen, stehen oder werden damit wiederum hauptsächlich politische Interessen bedient, die sich in Wahrheit nicht um unsere Ökosysteme kümmern? Tatsache ist jedenfalls, dass REPowerEU, ein Plan zur raschen Verringerung der Abhängigkeit von fossilen Brennstoffen aus Russland und zur Beschleunigung des ökologischen Wandels ist – so heißt es in der offiziellen Aussendung aus Brüssel.

How can we make an effective contribution to sustainable economic and social development? Is that really the question that is at the center of all efforts and activities, all plans and guidelines that come from Brussels, or are they mainly serving political interests that really don't care about our ecosystems?

The fact is that REPowerEU is a plan to rapidly reduce dependence on fossil fuels from Russia and accelerate ecological transition - according to the official broadcast from Brussels. 

Since the 2000s, the three dimensions of sustainability—ecology, social, and economy—have been in focus. However, the ecological perspective has dominated so far. The EU Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth reflects this by prioritizing climate goals. However, the social implications of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, and the social dimension, which places people and society at the heart of sustainability, needs to gain awareness.

The "imh Sustainable Finance Conference" was recently held in Vienna, and I was the technical chair. The topics covered ranged from politics - the Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy and the Environment Agency Austria - to presentations by the Financial Market Authority, the Austrian Control Bank and the Austrian Development Bank, and culminated with the Austrian Ministry of Finance reporting on green innovations in public finance.
